About GMC

Global Management Challenge is the world’s largest strategy and management competition based on a simulation that mirrors company. More than 500,000 university students and young professionals have participated in the competition throughout the world over the last 30 years.

The concept of the competition emerged in 1980 in Portugal by SDG – Simuladores e Modelos de Gestão – in partnership with the weekly newspaper EXPRESSO. EXPRESSO has not only given a great amount of national coverage on the competition, but has also contributed immensely to the internationalization process.

Global Management Challenge is accredited by European Foundation for Management Development as TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED LEARNING.

The competition is open to university students and young professionals organised as teams of 3 to 5 members managing a company as its senior management. In their capacity as the management of the virtual company, the participants take decisions relating to the sales and marketing, production, human resources and finances of the company. The decisions are made in a highly competitive, constantly changing environment because the simulation software assesses all the decisions of each participating team in comparison with the decisions of the other competing teams within their group. As such, no decision is right or wrong; however, the team that makes better decisions compared to others within their group is rewarded by achieving the best Investment Performance for the shareholders of the virtual company at the end of the Competition.

Investment Performance

This criterion measures the investment ‘return’ for the original shareholders not just as the value of their shares at the end of the competition but also after allowing for any shares purchased, or sold, and also any dividends received.

How the competetion works?

Each team receives information(Company History) about the Company it is about to run;

Outlines a Corporate Strategy;

Launches its Strategy by making functional decisions in different areas of the Company (Marketing, Production, Human Resources and Finances).

Then, it submits its Management Decisions (Decision sheet) to the Simulator via the Internet.

The Simulator

SDG and EDIT 515 U.K are partners in developing and improving this Simulator. Their aim is to ensure that it is up-to- date, relevant and challenging in order to meet the participating company’s current needs, and to keep up with the latest technology.

The Simulator was designed and developed by Partners of EDIT 515 U.K, Professors of the Operational Research Department of the University of Strathclyde in Scotland (Key subject for a Master’s in Business Administration of the Graduate Business School of this University).
